Most tree surgery and landscaping jobs come from local customers. When someone searches for a “tree surgeon near me” or a “landscaper in [their town]”, Google shows a map with a handful of local businesses, followed by websites. Local SEO is the work that helps your business appear in those results.

Use this checklist to cover the basics. You do not need to do everything at once – start at the top and work down.

1. Set up and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local map results. It is free and is one of the most important parts of local SEO.

  • Claim and verify your profile
  • Choose the most accurate main category, such as “Tree service” or “Landscaper”
  • Add your service areas, phone number, website and opening hours
  • Upload real photos of your work, your team and your vehicles
  • List your services, such as tree felling, crown reduction, stump grinding, patios or garden design
  • Post updates or recent projects from time to time

2. Keep your business details consistent

Make sure your business name, phone number and address (or service area) are exactly the same on your website, your Google Business Profile and any directories you are listed on. Inconsistent details can confuse customers and search engines.

3. Give each main service its own page

A single “Services” page is rarely enough. Create a page for each important service, explaining what it involves, who it is for and how to get a quote. For example:

  • Tree surgeons: tree felling, pruning and crown reduction, stump grinding, hedge trimming, emergency tree work
  • Landscapers: garden design, patios and paving, fencing, turfing, planting and maintenance

Use the words your customers use. People search for “stump grinding”, not “arboricultural services”.

4. Mention the areas you genuinely cover

Say clearly on your website which towns and areas you work in. If you cover several towns, you can create location pages – but only for places you really serve, and each page should contain useful, original information rather than the same text with a different town name.

5. Collect genuine reviews

Reviews help you stand out in the map results and build trust with new customers. Ask happy customers for a Google review after every job – a short text or WhatsApp message with a direct review link works well. Reply to reviews politely, including any negative ones. Never buy or fake reviews; it breaks Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended.

6. Show your qualifications and insurance

Tree work in particular can be dangerous, and customers want reassurance. If you hold relevant qualifications, trade memberships or public liability insurance, say so clearly on your website and profile. Only list credentials you genuinely hold.

7. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on mobile phones. Your website should load quickly, show a tap-to-call button and make it easy to request a quote. Galleries of your work are important for landscapers and tree surgeons, but compress your photos so they do not slow the website down.

8. Get listed on relevant local directories

Listings on reputable UK and local directories can help customers find you and reinforce your business details. Focus on quality – a handful of relevant, accurate listings is better than dozens of low-quality ones.

9. Keep adding useful content

Seasonal advice, project write-ups and answers to common customer questions all give Google more reasons to show your website – and give customers more reasons to trust you. Even one helpful post a month adds up over time.

Your local SEO checklist

  • Google Business Profile claimed, verified and complete
  • Business details consistent everywhere
  • A page for each main service
  • Service areas clearly listed
  • A steady flow of genuine Google reviews
  • Qualifications and insurance shown where relevant
  • Fast, mobile-friendly website with tap-to-call
  • A few quality directory listings
  • Regular helpful content
