For most building firms, a new customer’s first impression now comes from a website. Homeowners planning an extension, loft conversion or renovation will usually look you up online before they pick up the phone – and they will compare you with other local builders. Here are the ten things every builder’s website should have.

1. A clear headline

Say what you do and where you work in one line – for example, “Extensions, Loft Conversions and Renovations in Bristol”. Visitors should know within seconds that they are in the right place.

2. A page for each main service

Extensions, loft conversions, kitchens, bathrooms, groundwork and general building work are all searched for separately. Give each main service its own page, with a description, photos and a clear way to ask for a quote.

3. A gallery of real projects

Photos of your own finished work are the most convincing thing on a builder’s website. Show a range of projects, add a short description of each, and include before-and-after photos where you can. Avoid stock photos – customers can usually tell.

4. Genuine reviews and testimonials

Show reviews from real customers, ideally linked to your Google reviews. A few detailed reviews that mention the type of job and the area are more convincing than a long list of one-liners.

5. Accreditations, insurance and guarantees

If you are a member of a trade body, hold relevant certifications, carry public liability insurance or offer a guarantee on your work, say so clearly. Only list what you genuinely hold – honesty builds more trust than impressive-sounding badges.

6. The areas you cover

List the main towns and areas you work in. Local customers want to know you cover their postcode, and it helps Google show your website for local searches.

7. An easy way to get in touch

Put a tap-to-call phone number at the top of every page, add a WhatsApp button, and include a short enquiry form. Ask only for what you need – name, phone number, postcode and a short description of the job.

8. An explanation of how you work

Building projects can feel daunting. A simple step-by-step explanation – from the first visit and quote to completion and sign-off – reassures customers and sets expectations.

9. A fast, mobile-friendly design

Most visitors will be on their phone. Your website should load quickly, be easy to read on a small screen and have large, clear buttons. Compress photos so your gallery does not slow the site down.

10. The basics of local SEO

A great website still needs to be found. Give every page a clear title, set up and complete your Google Business Profile, and keep your business details consistent across the web. Our local SEO checklist walks through the basics, and they apply to builders too.
